Deep Bite Wound From Feral Animal in Redbone Coonhound Patient

History: My Redbone Coonhound sustained a 3 cm laceration after being bitten by a feral animal. The wound penetrated through the fascia and muscle of the hind limb, extending all the way to the femur. Given the depth of the injury, the traditional standard of care would have been surgical closure with drain placement. The wound was deep and extensive, with a high risk for self-trauma due to the patient's anxiety and the presence of 3 other dogs in the household.

Treatment: After consulting with our veterinarian, I packed the wound with KeraVet Gel 4 times on the first day to discourage licking. I then applied KeraVet Gel twice daily for the next 3 days and once daily thereafter.

Clinical Outcome with KeraVet Gel: The wound closed completely by day 7. No E-collars, bandages, sutures, drains, or additional wound care products were required. The entire course of treatment used approximately half a tube of KeraVet Gel. Being able to manage the wound at home without an E-collar or dressings was a significant benefit for this highly anxious patient and our family.
