Dehisced Incision From Mass Removal

History: Charlie, a 10.5-year-old MN Australian Shepherd, underwent surgical excision of a mass that adhered to the connective tissue fascia of the biceps femoris muscle. During recovery, a blow-up E-collar and loose legging cover were used. Due to significant motion when walking, the incision dehisced at the skin level mid-incision. It became infected, and Charlie was prescribed cephalexin for 10 days and started honey silver wound ointment twice daily.

Physical Examination/Clinical Findings: Despite treatment, the dehisced area was still trying to heal by second intention on day 20. The wound remained moist and had not progressed to complete closure.

Treatment: KeraVet Gel was initiated on day 20 of healing and applied twice daily.

Clinical Outcome with KeraVet Gel: Within 12 hours of the first application, the area had visibly improved, with reduced moisture and erythema. KeraVet Gel was continued twice daily for 5 days. By day 5 of treatment, there was only a small scab remaining.
