Distal Tail Amputation in a Shelter Cat

History: A 2.5-year-old DSH FS cat presented to the local municipal shelter as a surrender. She had a tail injury requiring amputation of the distal part. The cat, as part of the shelter community, would remain in a standard shelter kennel until healed enough to be put up for adoption. There were no foster homes available at the time. Use of an E-collar was not feasible, as the cat repeatedly removed it and had access to the surgical site. Due to shelter staff limitations, frequent bandage changes and intensive wound care management were not practical.

Clinical Challenge: Preventing self-trauma to the surgical site while supporting wound healing in a high-risk shelter environment with limited handling.

Clinical Outcome: The cat was prescribed antibiotics, gabapentin and KeraVet Gel was applied topically to the surgical site once daily, with attempts to apply twice daily when staffing allowed. Following application, the patient showed marked reduction in licking and interference with the tail. Despite less-than-ideal treatment frequency, healing progressed steadily from a raw post-operative site to complete healing with full hair growth within approximately 3 weeks. Also, this patient did not like her tail being touched and the surgical area was sensitive. But when staff or I applied the KeraVet Gel, she would cooperate and as if the gel was soothing when applied.

Success with KeraVet Gel: KeraVet Gel functioned as both a lick deterrent and a wound-healing support in a setting where E-collar use and frequent intervention were not possible. The product adhered well to the surgical site, reduced self-trauma, and supported timely, uncomplicated healing. Based on this outcome, KeraVet Gel was considered a practical and effective option for similar shelter and clinical patients.
