(And How Keratin-Based Science Sets KeraVet Gel Apart)

If you are in clinical practice, you’ve probably seen just about everything applied to a wound. Honey from someone’s pantry, silver cream left over from a decades-old protocol, and of course the classic “maybe if it tastes terrible they’ll stop licking it” Bitter Apple Spray. They all have their moments. They also all have their limits. And when your patient is determined, itchy, or sporting the confidence of a dog who would definitely remove their E-collar in the parking lot, you need something that can actually keep up.

Here’s how the usual wound care suspects stack up:

1. Honey: Naturally antimicrobial, but limited in scope

Medical-grade honey offers antimicrobial benefits, but its role in wound healing is fairly narrow. Because it’s sticky and sweet-tasting, it can be difficult to keep in place on active and grooming-prone dogs and cats.

2. Zarasyl: Barrier support, not a biology boost

Silica-based products like over-the-counter product Zarasyl are designed to create a protective barrier and maintain a moist healing environment. While this can be helpful for minor wounds and superficial skin issues, these products are generally recommended for mild cases. Silica itself acts as a passive structural component, unlike biologically active proteins (like keratin) that participate directly in the healing process. The absence of a bitterant means licking remains an ongoing challenge.

3. Vetericyn Plus VF Antimicrobial Hydrogel: Heals wound, but no lick deterrent

Vetericyn Plus VF Antimicrobial Hydrogel is a prescription-only product that relies on hypochlorous acid and functions primarily as a wound cleanser. While it adheres well and helps wounds heal through the actions of cleansing, irrigation, and debridement, it does not contain a bitterant to keep tongues away.

4. Silver Sulfadiazine: Antimicrobial only

Silver-based products, most commonly silver sulfadiazine, have long been a staple in veterinary wound care due to their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. They are effective at reducing bacterial load and are often used when infection is a primary concern. However, their role is largely limited to antimicrobial control. Silver does not actively support tissue regeneration, modulate inflammation, or address edema. Silver-based therapies are best viewed as one piece of a wound care plan rather than a comprehensive solution for supporting the full healing process.

5. Bitter Apple Spray: A deterrent, not a treatment

Bitter Apple Spray may discourage licking or chewing, but provides no therapeutic benefit to the wound itself. There is no barrier function, no inflammation control, and no support for tissue repair, and some dogs and cats couldn’t care less about it.

Where KeraVet Gel fits in

KeraVet Gel is the first and only keratin-based hydrogel in veterinary medicine designed to support the body’s natural healing response. Research shows it modulates inflammation, reduces edema, provides a stable protective barrier, and thanks to a clinically proven, powerful and safe bitterant, it continues working even when E-collar compliance is… aspirational.

KeraVet Gel is clinically proven to reduce edema, chronic inflammation, and lessen wound licking in up to 87% of pets.

Veterinarians’ favorite uses of KeraVet Gel include dermatitis, incisions, superficial injuries and abrasions, traumatic injuries, bite wounds, hot spots and acral lick granulomas. KeraVet Gel brings wound care into the modern era.
